16 June 2004 09:28 EU TO FINANCE ECONOMY DEREGULATION PROJECT FOR RUSSIA MOSCOW. June 16 (Interfax) - The European Union is willing to earmark 2.8 million euros for implementing a project on
lifting excessive administrative barriers from Russian businesses at the federal and regional levels, Deputy Head of the
European Commission's delegation to Russia Vincent Piket said at a press conference on Wednesday.
The project will involve four Russian regions, namely St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Novgorod, and Yekaterinburg and
will last from April 2004 to December 2005, Piket said. The European Union will be the leading donor of the project,
while the World Bank and the Russian presidential office will also make contributions, he said.
The EU will monitor the project implementation and the employment of experts for it, he said.
The project envisions training trips to the EU member-countries, the compilation of a database at the Economic
Development and Trade Ministry concerning past and current projects on deregulating the economy, and studying the
EU's record in this field.
Piket said the EU attaches great significance to the project and hopes that its implementation will create more
favorable conditions for small and medium businesses.
