Business in Brief: Prosecutors Visit MDM
MOSCOW -- Prosecutors seized documents last week from the offices of MDM bank in connection with a criminal investigation into a related coal mining company, Vedomosti reported Thursday. In 2002 the Higher Arbitration Court ruled that a subsidiary of MDM's Siberian coal miner SUEK had sold stock in three coal pits at knock-down prices to offshore companies close to MDM. The subsidiary, Krasugol, reportedly paid 1.2 billion rubles in unpaid taxes to the government. But earlier this month tax authorities requested that prosecutors open a criminal investigation to determine who had organized the sale of the coal pits, Vedomosti reported. An Interior Ministry source told the paper that police had confiscated documents from MDM bank in relation to a case brought by tax authorities. .TX-..**********************************************
