17 June 2004 19:29 Delegation from Russia`s Tatarstan develops trade links with Iran A delegation from Tatarstan headed by the Russian republic's minister for trade and foreign economic
cooperation, Khafiz Salikhov, is visiting Iran, the Russian Tatar-Inform news agency reported on 15 June. The main aim
of the visit is to develop cooperation between the petrochemical, machine building and medical industries in Tatarstan
and Iran.
The Tatarstan Ministry for Trade and Foreign Economic Cooperation said that the visit was part of agreements reached
during a meeting between Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaymiyev, Iranian ambassador to Russia Gholamreza Shafe'i
and Mohammed Foruzandeh, the head of the Iranian Foundation for the Oppressed and Disabled (MJF), in April 2004. The
visit was also organized at the invitation of Gholam-Ali Kiani, the vice-president of MJF and director of the Iranian
Organization of Mining and Refining Industry.
The Tatarstan delegation included government officials and representatives of leading Tatarstan companies, including
KamAZ, Tatgazinvest, Tatkhimfarmpreparaty, Tatneftekhiminvest-kholding and the Kazan helicopter factory.
During the visit meetings were held with officials from the Esfahan Petrochemicals Complex, the Air Space Industry
Organization, the National Petrochemical Commercial Company, the Civil Development and Housing Organization and MJF.
In 2003 bilateral trade between Tatarstan and Iran doubled in comparison to 2002 to reach about 3.379m dollars.
Exports from Tatarstan to Iran were worth about 3.375m dollars. Tatarstan customs figures show that bilateral trade in
the first quarter of 2004 was about 4.506m dollars, all of which was exports from Tatarstan.
