17 June 2004 12:19 European Russia relies heavily on nuclear power, says operator Moscow, 17 June: Since 1998 Russian nuclear power stations have increased electricity production by about 7bn kWh,
averaged out per year, meeting, on average, up to 50 per cent of the increased electricity needs of European Russia.
A press release from the Rosenergoatom concern says Russian nuclear power stations increased electricity output by 40
per cent between 1999 and 2003.
The Russian Federation currently has 30 [nuclear] power units, with a combined capacity of 22.2 GW, in operation. The
total output of electricity at nuclear power stations during 2003 was 148.6bn kWh, or roughly 16.5 per cent of
electricity production at all Russian power stations, even though nuclear's share of total installed capacity
amounts to only about 11 per cent.
