15 June 2004 07:43 Russian senators, British parliaments discuss Iraq MOSCOW. June 15 (Interfax) - Members of the Russian Federation Council and British parliamentarians discussed the
situation in Iraq and the Middle East in general, Chairman of the Federation Council's international affairs
committee Mikhail Margelov said following a meeting with a delegation from the House of Commons of the British
parliament.
"We talked about the new NATO initiative on Iraq, which will be made public at the summit in Istanbul, and we
talked about how Russian and British parliamentarians could work together in international parliamentary
organizations," Margelov told journalists.
Russian and British parliamentarians have many topics of common interest to discuss, including those concerning NATO
and the European Union's enlargement, efforts to fight international terrorism and creating a legal basis for them,
he said.
Margelov said the British parliamentarians wanted to know how far Russia would become involved in the peaceful
reconstruction of Iraq.
"This is a very rich country, and we are not talking now about raising international or foreign money for its
restoration," Margelov said.
The Iraqi people should be given the opportunity to use "the millions and billions of dollar" that have
been frozen and are being held in foreign banks.
"It is a pleasure that our British colleagues agree with this," Margelov said. [RU GB IQ EUROPE ASIA EEU
