Eight candidates registered for Chechen presidential election
Groznyy, 15 June: The eighth candidate for the post of Chechen president has been registered, the Chechen electoral commission has told RIA. "Yesterday [14 June] Khuseyn Bibulatov, a resident of the town of Elektrogorsk, submitted documents for registration as a candidate for the post of president of the republic," the commission said. The commission said that Bibulatov had taken part in the last presidential election and gained less that five per cent of the vote. "Until the collapse of the Soviet Union Bibulatov was the chairman of Chechnya's Gosplan [state planning committee] and then served as first secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union's regional committee in Nozhay-Yurtovskiy District," the commission said. Earlier the electoral commission registered the following candidates for the post of president: Marat Zaynalabirov, a doctor from Rostov; Sultan Ayskhanov, a surgeon and assistant to State Duma deputy Aleksandr Malyshkin; Adam Edilov, a lawyer from Groznyy; Malik Saydulayev, a businessman from Moscow; Mariat Garchkhanova, a resident of Urus-Martan; Vakhit Visayev from Nozhay-Yurt; and Magomet Aydamirov, a businessman from Tolstoy-Yurt. The Chechen presidential election is scheduled for 29 August. The decision to hold it was taken after President Akhmat Kadyrov was killed in a blast in Groznyy on 9 May. Candidates can come forward until 14 July.
