14 June 2004 19:32 Russia backs Abkhaz plea for lifting of economic sanctions Sukhumi, 14 June: The vice-president of the [Georgian] breakaway republic of Abkhazia, Valeriy Arshba, today called
for economic sanctions against the republic to be lifted.
The decision to impose the sanctions was taken at the CIS summit in January 1996.
At a meeting with the leader of the [Russian State Duma] Motherland faction, Dmitriy Rogozin, who has arrived in
Sukhumi, Arshba also spoke "in favour of establishing legal financial and credit relations with Russia and
simplifying the border-crossing procedure and customs control".
According to Rogozin, the sanctions imposed eight years ago "have not produced anything good". "Russia
is showing much interest in developments in Abkhazia," he said. "The main task is to ensure security in this
land of plenty."
