14 June 2004 18:23 RUSSIA: ISLAMIC CENTER INAUGURATED IN KARELIYA According to IINA, a new Islamic center was opened in a northern city in the Russian republic of Kareliya, near the
borders of Finland. The center houses separate prayer halls for men and women, hall for taking classes and a library.
The municipality also agreed to allocate a plot of land to build the first mosque in the city. There are around 20,000
Muslims in the republic of Kareliya.
