Kazakh, Russian main parties sign cooperation accord
Almaty, 12 June: One Russia [the major pro-presidential party] and the Kazakh Otan party [the major pro-presidential party] have concluded a cooperation memorandum. A member of the Russian party's supreme council and the first deputy speaker of the State Duma, Lyubov Sliska, and an Otan deputy chairman and the Majlis (lower house of parliament) speaker, Zharmakhan Tuyakbay, signed the document in Almaty today. "Russia and Kazakhstan are the most closely integrated countries in the post-Soviet space. Strong ties of cooperation in the economic, political and cultural spheres connect our countries today. We have signed many interstate documents which now genuinely work for the benefit of both Kazakhstan and Russia. We, the parties of power of the two countries, also need to add to the warm relations that have been formed between Kazakhstan and Russia," Tuyakbay said at a joint briefing with Sliska following the signing of the memorandum. Sliska noted that the memorandum "reinforces the intentions of the leading political organizations" of Russia and Kazakhstan to cooperate on major social and political issues. Sliska added that the parties intended to exchange their experiences in party building and legislation. "We intend to cooperate not only in the capitals or during holidays. Kazakhstan and Russia have many border areas, and it is necessary to develop cultural and economic cooperation between them," Sliska pointed out. A press release circulated at the briefing by Otan specifies that the parties have agreed to conduct a number of joint conferences, seminars and round tables, at which "topical issues" will be discussed.
