Gryzlov wants Alkhanov to run for Chechen presidency
MOSCOW. June 10 (Interfax) - Russian State Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov has announced plans to support Alu Alkhanov as a candidate for the Chechen presidency, if Alkhanov decides to join the presidential race in the republic. "I personally would support this decision," Gryzlov told Interfax on Thursday. Earlier today, supporters of Chechnya's late President Akhmad Kadyrov said they would nominate the republic's former Interior Minister Gen. A. Alkhanov as their candidate in the republic's presidential elections. Gryzlov said United Russia party, which he leads, plans to discuss the situation in Chechnya in the run-up to the elections. He said that he knows Alkhanov very well. "When I was [Russian] interior minister, I suggested his candidacy for the post of Chechen interior minister, and he lived up to the trust I had in him," he said. "Alkhanov fulfilled his functions honestly. His efforts were aimed at keeping Chechnya within Russia," he said. [RU EUROPE EEU EMRG POL VOTE] tm tl
