10 June 2004 05:23 Chechen interior minister possible lead candidate to presidency GROZNY. June 10 (Interfax) - Gen. Alu Alkhanov, interior minister of the Russian internal republic of Chechnya, could
become the front runner in the republic's presidential race.
Nearly everybody who spoke in Tsentoroi, Kurchaloi district, at the wake for Zelimkhan Kadyrov, son of late president
Akhmad Kadyrov, who died of a heart attack several days ago, called on Aklhanov to run in the election.
Chechen State Council Chairman Taus Dzhabrailov said that Akhmad Kadyrov's team respected the public's view
and would support Alkhanov if he agreed to run.
Alkhanov was one of Kadyrov's best supporters and has always been tough on separatists, Dzhabrailov said.
Over 5,000 people from all parts of Chechnya, including important political figures like acting president Sergei
Abramov, assembled for the wake, its organizers say.
