10 June 2004 05:23 Presidential envoy to south Russia to supervise payment of wage arrears ROSTOV-ON-DON. June 10 (Interfax-South) -The payment of wages to employees of the coal mining company Rostovugol who
are currently on hunger strike will be supervised by local authorities and the prosecutor's office, presidential
envoy to the Southern Federal District Vladimir Yakovlev told reporters on Thursday.
"The mayors of Shakhty and Novoshakhtinsk and the cities' prosecution offices have been told to watch
problems with wage arrears closely," he said in the course of a business trip to Nalchik.
"The paying of back wages in the Rostov region has not end social tension in the area," he admitted.
"Wage arrears were paid on Wednesday to 16 workers at the Shakhty Mining Equipment Plant," following which
they ended their hunger strike, he said.
Meanwhile, 29 workers at Special Mounting Directorate No. 1 in Shakhty and 20 workers at Trucking Enterprise No. 5 in
Novoshakhtinsk are continuing their hunger strike for back wages.
The hunger strike at Special Mounting Directorate No. 1 may end shortly because nearly one million rubles earmarked
for the payment of back wages to the strikers has reached the enterprise, which intends to distribute the money on
Thursday. [RU EUROPE ASIA EMRG COA JOB] ap aw
