11 June 2004 18:45 Russian envoy notes "mixed" view of US plan to cut Korea military presence Moscow, 11 June: "Russia is closely watching the development of the military and political situation in the
Korean Peninsula given the closeness of the region to Russia's Far East," the Russian Foreign Ministry's
special envoy, Aleksandr Alekseyev, told an ITAR-TASS correspondent in an exclusive interview today. He was commenting
on the USA's plans to reduce its military presence there by one-third.
"We know that there is very mixed attitude both in South and North Korea towards the USA's plans to
`re-arrange' its military presence on the Korean peninsula," the diplomat said. He said the issue was
currently the topic of US-South Korean talks.
"As for Russia, we are ready to support any steps which will enhance tranquillity, peace and stability on the
Korean Peninsula," Aleksandr Alekseyev emphasized.
