09 June 2004 10:45 Chechen government compensation committee dismantled GROZNY. June 9 (Interfax) - The liquidation of the Chechen government's committee on compensation and the
dismissal of its head, Abubakhir Baibatyrov, will improve the examination of requests by Chechen citizens who have lost
their homes, acting Chechen president Sergei Abramov told journalists on Wednesday.
"The decree that I have signed today will help Chechen citizens to receive compensation for lost homes and
property within the terms set by the Russian government," he said.
Abramov did not say whether any criminal violations were discovered in Baibatyrov's work, which was however
deemed unsatisfactory.
He also said that the payment of compensation will not stop due to the committee's dismantling. "More than
that, I am sure that we will manage to improve the situation and pay compensation to 16,000 families before the end of
July," Abramov said.
According to data provided by the acting president, 88,000 families have applied for compensation, and 40,000 houses
have been examined and were deemed completely destroyed. He also said that approximately 4,000 people have already
received compensation.
Abramov said that it is planned to construct 3 million square meters of living space in Chechnya in 2005. [RU EUROPE
