10 June 2004 19:18 Foreign imports cut into CIS share of Russian sunflower oil market Moscow, 10 June: Russia's imports of sunflower oil amounted to 53,700 t in January-April, almost unchanged on
the year, according to the latest customs statistics released on Thursday [10 June]. The imports have levelled out on
the back of increased shipments in April.
The January-March imports were down 14 per cent on the year. The import increase occurred from outside the CIS with
shipments totalling 16,900 t in January-April, up from 14,700 tonnes a year earlier. Meanwhile, imports from the CIS,
mainly Ukraine, accounted for 36,800 t, down 5.5 per cent on the year.
In 2003, Russian sunoil imports were up 14 per cent on the year to 200,800 t. The increase was due to a 51 per cent
rise in CIS imports to 153,400 t, while non-CIS imports were down 36 per cent on the year to 47,400 t. This occurred as
Ukraine's sunflower oil substituted volumes earlier delivered from Argentina.
