Russia views rebel Chechen envoy`s visit to Norway as "provocation" , 10 June: Moscow is bewildered by reports about the arrival in Norway of Chechen terrorist envoy Akhmed Zakayev and his meetings with members of the Norwegian political establishment, says a Foreign Ministry statement received by Interfax today. "It is likely that Zakayev was invited because someone wanted "to balance" obvious political tendencies in the developing Russian-Norwegian political dialogue and cooperation," the document says. "We regard the visit as provocation on the part of the forces that are not happy about these tendencies," the Russian Foreign Ministry said. The document points out that "Zakayev's visit to Norway looks even more sacrilegious while his supporters are continuing to commit terrorist acts in Chechnya condemned by the world community. In particular, Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov has died in a terrorist explosion". "Zakayev's case has not been closed. Russia insists on his extradition or court trial. We expect that the official Oslo will not only clearly express its position under the current situation but also will fully meet its obligations as a participant in the antiterrorist coalition," the Foreign Ministry statement says. The document says that, if contacts with Zakayev are prompted by "a wish to receive objective information about the situation surrounding Chechnya, this choice cannot be described as a good one". "For this purpose, Russia could have recommended reliable and realistic participants in the process of political settlement and social and economic revival currently taking place in Chechnya," the Russian Foreign Ministry says.
