10 June 2004 12:15 Russian speaker slams communists, patriots for opposing housing code [Presenter] The State Duma today adopted in the first reading the draft housing code. It gives poor citizens the
right to be given free housing. Our correspondent Gennadiy Goryachev is in a live link-up now. Hello, Gennadiy. What new
points does the housing code adopted today contain?
[Correspondent] Hello. I want to note that everything did not work out without a row today. To protest against the
housing code in its new wording, the left-wing opposition, the Motherland and Communist Party factions, left the session
hall. The task of the parliamentary majority, One Russia, has obviously been substantially simplified now. Moreover, I
shall recall that the zero reading was already held with the government and housing experts. Moreover, the whole package
was approved. It was drawn up by a special One Russia commission. Incidentally, the opposition was also invited. There
was an utterly unexpected turn at the plenary session. Speaker Boris Gryzlov assessed the demarche of the communists and
patriots as follows.
[Gryzlov] They wanted to lead us all to communism by 1980 in the last century. They wanted to lodge us all in
separate apartments by 2000. They failed to do so. However, they simply do not want to really work at laws which will
enable us now to substantially change the housing situation for our citizens. Their ambitions are only to show off, but
they have not done so and are not doing any real work.
