Russia ups foreign trade surplus in Jan-April (Part 2)
MOSCOW. June 8 (Interfax) - Russia's foreign trade surplus climbed to $29.1 billion in January-April 2004, from $24.5 billion in the same period of 2003, the State Customs Committee reported. The committee said that foreign trade climbed 24.5% to $70.9 billion in January-April 2004, including $58 billion in trade with non- CIS countries, up 22.8%, and $12.9 billion in trade with CIS countries, up 32.6%. In export to countries outside the CIS, fuel and energy made 57.5% of the entire volume of export to these countries (62.4% in Exports of natural gas remained at the same level as in January- April 2003, while crude exports rose 16.1%. Nickel exports were Russian exports amounted to $50 billion, up 22.8%, with exports to non-CIS countries at $42 billion, up 21.3%, and exports to CIS countries at $8 billion, up 31%. Imports totaled $20.9 billion, up 28.8%, with imports from non-CIS countries up 26.9% to $16 billion, and imports from the CIS up 35.4% at $4.9 billion. January-April 2003). Metals and metal goods accounted for 19.2% (14%), chemicals for 6.4% (6.7%), machine building production for 6.6% (5.1%), and timber and pulp and paper goods for 4.5% (4.6%). virtually unchanged and copper exports dropped 22.2%, but because of a rise in prices, exports surged 90.5% and 36.7%, respectively, in value terms. Machine building production increased 56.8% in value terms. Actual export volumes increased 36.7% for ferroalloys, 38.7% for unprocessed aluminum, and 15.9% for lumber. In import to countries outside the CIS, machine building production accounted for 43.5% of the total (38.3% in January-April 2003), food and food inputs made up 19.1% (24.5%), and chemicals - 18.1% (17.8%). Trade with the European Union accounted for 36.4% of total trade turnover (37.2% in January-April 2003), the CIS accounted for 18.2% (17.1%), Eurasian Economic Community countries for 10.2% (9.6%), Asia Pacific region countries for 16.7% (15.5%), and Central And Eastern European countries for 12.1% (13.6%). Russia's main trade partners were Germany with turnover totaling $6.7 billion, up 18.5%; the Netherlands - $4.7 billion, up 61.6%; China -$4.5 billion, up 37.5%; Italy - $3.6 billion, up 1.4%; Finland - $2.6 billion, up 22.6%; Poland - $2.4 billion, up 15.2%; Turkey - $2.4 billion, up 38.1%; the United States - $2.3 billion, up 9%; Switzerland -$2.1 billion, up 14.7% and Japan - $2.1 billion, up 77.9%.
