08 June 2004 00:47 National union protests to be held in over 300 cities MOSCOW. June 8 (Interfax) - A nationwide trade union protest action against government-proposed social and labor
legislation will be held on Thursday in over 300 cities, said Federation of Independent Trade Unions deputy chairman
Alexei Surikov.
"The main purpose of the action is to make the authorities recall government-proposed bills from the Duma that
seriously affect the interests of working people and actually dismantling the system of social guarantees that has
evolved in Russia since 1991," Surikov told a Tuesday news conference.
"If the authorities fail to hear our voice and amend government- proposed bills, the unions will launch
preparations for a warning strike on a national scale in autumn," he said.
Asked whether actions beyond the limits of the law, such as the obstruction of traffic, are possible, Surikov said:
"Trade unions don't intend to initiate such actions, but if they break out spontaneously, we will support the
participants." [RU EUROPE ASIA EEU EMRG JOB] ml tl
