09 June 2004 20:16 Iran and Russia sign economic cooperation agreement Tehran, 9 June: An economic/trade delegation representing Moscow Chamber of Commerce in a meeting here Wednesday [9
June] with members of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines examined signing a memorandum of understanding
(MoU) on economic cooperation.
In the meeting, Head of Tehran Chamber of Commerce Mohammad Reza Behzadian pointed out the prospect of reinforcing
trade exchange and economic collaboration between the two sides.
Turning to the satisfactory cooperation between the two governments in recent years within the framework of joint
economic commission, he said that some MoUs have been inked to the effect.
Expressing pleasure with Iran-Russia cooperation in industrial and technological fields, he urged the need to expand
collaboration between the private sectors and tradesmen of both sides in proportion to the inter-governmental
relations.
"Transportation and transit of various goods including oil and its by-products originating from the Commonwealth
of the Independent States (CIS) through Iran are proper fields for cooperation between the private sectors of Iran and
Russia.
"Meanwhile, the Russian private enterprises can participate in Iran's petrochemical industry and invest in
the energy sector," he added.
Behzadian said that Russian tradesmen could pave the way for the active presence of Iran's food processing
industries in Russia's major market.
Reiterating the need to lift the obstacles halting further activity by the private sector, the official said that
once they are lifted, the two states could also consider cooperation in tourism and other domains.
For his part, vice-president of Moscow Chamber of Commerce, Nikolay Kartashov referred to the numerous mutual
attractions for investment and urged that both sides should welcome foreign investment in their countries.
"We have no problem in this respect and are willing to further bolster cooperation in all fields," he
added.
Referring to Russia's high economic and trade potentials, the official said that owners of industries in his
country are greatly interested in cooperating with Iranian businessmen. [Passage omitted: details of the meeting]
