Russian parliament approves controversial bill on rallies
Moscow, 9 June: The Russian Federation Council [upper house of parliament] today approved the bill "On meetings, rallies, demonstrations, marches and picketing". After a short discussion the bill was supported by 129 members of the Council with 7 voting against it and 8 abstaining. The bill was passed by the State Duma [lower house] on 4 June after numerous amendments proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, MPs, members of the Federation Council and the Russian government were taken into account. [Passage omitted]
