09 June 2004 18:39 CIS security body heading for standardized weapons, training - Russian official Moscow, 9 June: The question of the transfer of the armed forces of the organization's participant countries to
common military standards is being considered in the Collective Security Treaty Organization [CSTO].
"On the basis of an analysis that has been done, we are currently working through proposals on the main
directions of coalition military cooperation within the framework of the CSTO," Nikolay Bordyuzha, the
secretary-general of the CSTO, has said at a news conference held at the RIA-Novosti news agency.
This is "not yet a plan and not a vision of the final look of the military make-up of the CSTO but certain
proposals on common standards can already be implemented today", he said.
Bordyuzha said that right now such common standards could be applied to armaments, military equipment and basic
military training in the armed forces of the participant countries of the CSTO.
In Bordyuzha's words, the transfer to common standards will also involve the established structure of the armed
forces of the CSTO.
"The transfer to common standards is an essential requirement. If we talk about the possibilities of conducting
joint combat actions, then we must resolve the question of compatibility," the secretary-general of the CSTO
stressed.
He also stressed that "consensus has been reached" on the issue of a transfer to common standards for
armaments, military equipment and military training.
