Russian MP welcomes adoption of UN Security Council resolution on Iraq
[No dateline, as received] The unanimous adoption of a resolution on Iraq by the UN Security Council allows the USA to give international legitimacy to its actions in Iraq, chairman of the State Duma international affairs committee Konstantin Kosachev told Ekho Moskvy. The USA has realized that the situation in Iraq "is developing according to the Iraqi, not the US scenario, and that they [the USA] will not be able to handle it on their own", he said. "The Americans presented the relevant draft four times, each time considering amendments that Russia saw as fundamental, such as the restoration of Iraq's sovereignty, control over its oil resources, the coordination of multinational force's actions in Iraq," Kosachev said. "The amendments that the Americans agreed to adopt and that had been prompted by Russia, France and Germany have made the text of the resolution acceptable for Russia, and, most important, for Iraq as far as the complete restoration of sovereignty in the country is concerned," Kosachev said.
