09 June 2004 17:49 Russian minister urges new ways to implement UN resolution on Kosovo Moscow, 9 June: It is necessary to "introduce major amendments to the process of the implementation of the UN
Security Council's resolution on Kosovo", Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said today after talks with
Foreign Minister of Serbia-Montenegro Vuk Draskovic.
"The mechanisms of the resolution have so far failed to prove their effectiveness," Lavrov noted. "The
contact group, whose function is to help regulate the situation, must work with a full sense of
responsibility."
["The recent statements by the UN Security Council and the statements made by the contact group at a meeting in
Pristina on 8 June show that our partners are beginning to understand the absolute legitimacy of our approaches and the
legitimacy of the position of Belgrade, which is not demanding more than what is envisaged in UN Security Council
resolution 1244," Lavrov was quoted as saying by RIA-Novosti news agency, Moscow, in Russian 1127 gmt 9 Jun
04.]
In turn, Draskovic spoke in favour of "removing the reasons for ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, ensuring security of
200,000 refugees and showing respect to them". In his opinion, "the establishment of European standards in
Kosovo should now be on the agenda". "This must be a European decision, which would envisage the creation of
modern borders," Draskovic explained.
