09 June 2004 10:43 More mine staff go on strike over wage arrears in Russia`s south Rostov-na-Donu, 9 June: Over 20 drivers of the Rostovugol [coal mining] company garage in the town of Novoshakhtinsk,
Rostov Region, have occupied the traffic manager's office and said they have gone on hunger strike, demanding wage
arrears to be paid.
This is the third group of company workers that has resorted to such radical measures.
Fifteen workers of the mining equipment plant went on hunger strike in the town of Shakhty on 31 May, while 25 miners
from the special assembly shop in Shakhty declared a hunger strike on 3 June. The enterprises are part of the Rostovugol
company.
The company is undergoing a bankruptcy procedure, an auction for its property has been scheduled for 15 June. The
company owners say that all the wage arrears will be paid after the auction.
[In a later report RIA news agency in Russian, Moscow 0610 gmt, quoted a local committee of the Russian
Coalminers' Union as saying that 24 employees of the company garage have gone on hunger strike.]
