07 June 2004 10:46 British Council given until June 9 to submit financial reports MOSCOW. June 7 (Interfax)- The Russian Interior Ministry is checking the financial activities of the British Council
in Russia and has requested to see the organization's financial reports.
"Police officers have visited the organization's central office and 14 branches and gave them until June 9
to submit financial documents on their activities, " Deputy Interior Minister Sergei Veryovkin-Rakhalsky told a
news conference on Monday.
"Law enforcement agencies are trying to make sense of what this organization is doing in Russia and how it makes
big money," he said.
The British Council organizes English courses in English speaking countries but first teaches children itself,
charging up to $300 per person per month, Veryovkin-Rakhalsky said.
The British embassy in Russia has expressed concern over what the police have done.
"We are surprised and concern by these actions," it said in a statement. "We are working to resolve
these issues as soon as possible with the relevant authorities," the statement says. [RU EUROPE ASIA EMRG CRIM GB
