07 June 2004 10:46 RUSSIA SEES INFLATION OF 0.7% IN MAY MOSCOW. June 7 (Interfax) - Consumer price inflation in Russia was 0.7% in May, compared with 1% in April, the
Federal State Statistics Service reported Monday.
Inflation was 5.3% in January-May 2004, compared with 7.1% in the same period of 2003 (inflation was 0.8% in May
2003).
The basic consumer prices index, which excludes short-term, irregular price changes influenced by administrative or
seasonal factors, was 100.6% in May (103.8% in January-May).
Prices for goods rose 0.6% in May, compared with 0.7% in April. Food prices went up 0.4% (0.8% in April). Food and
drink prices minus fruit and vegetables went up 0.5% (1%). Nonfood goods rose 0.8% (0.6%). Service charges grew 1.4% in
May, compared with 2% in April.
Inflation exceeded 1.5% in eight regions in May. Chukotka autonomous district had the highest inflation of 7.4%.
Inflation was 0.6% in May (5.8% in January-May) and 0.4% in St. Petersburg (4.8%).
