Russia: South Korean consul visits Sakhalin to talk gas
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, 9 June: Being a major consumer of natural gas, South Korea is interested in its supplies from Sakhalin. Leading South Korean companies are already holding negotiations at various levels on cooperation with the Russian Far East in developing natural resources. Sakhalin gas could become one of the principle areas of cooperation, Choi Jae-keun, consul general of the Republic of Korea [ROK] in Vladivostok, has told ITAR-TASS. Mr Choi came to Sakhalin to familiarize himself with the offshore projects on the island. A visit of the Sakhalin Region delegation to the ROK to start on 23 June should kick-start joint work in Sakhalin by South Korean and Russian companies. Specific discussions can then begin about South Korea taking part in Sakhalin projects. Mr Choi earlier visited Sakhalin to look at offshore oil and gas construction sites on the island. He described his current visit to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk as a "courtesy call", however, he is planning to hold a whole series of meetings with the managers of international companies operating in Sakhalin.
