Russia - MTS plans USDlr1.2 bil network expansion in 2004
Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) (Russia), cellular operator, plans to launch commercial services in 10 further regions across Russia by end-2004, according to president Vasily Sidorov. It expects to invest USDlr1.2 bil in network expansion in 2004, launching its network in the Russian cities of Stavropol, Kemerovo, Ulyanovsk and Chita; and in the Russian constituent republics of Buryatia, Mordovia, Yakutia and Chuvashia, and the Kamchatka Region. MTS currently operates networks in 62 of Russia's 89 regions. Another 15 regions will be added in 2005. MTS has mobile phone licences covering all Russian regions except the Chechen Republic and the Penza region. It had 16.93 mil subscribers at end-May 2004, of which 5.85 mil were in the Moscow area.
