07 June 2004 18:13 Ukraine rejects Russian credit to buy nuclear equipment Kiev, 7 June: The [Ukrainian] national nuclear energy company Enerhoatom has not used the credit in the form of
equipment which was offered by the Russian government for completing the construction of reactors at the Rivne and
Khmelnytskyy nuclear power plants [to make up for the shutdown of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant]. The company head
[and Fuel and Energy Minister] Serhiy Tulub told this to journalists in Kiev on Monday [7 June].
It is more profitable for the company to buy the equipment offered by the Russians than to take it on credit, Tulub
said. "We have come to the conclusion that we will be able to use the funds on our own and get the equipment from
Russian plants," Tulub said, adding that the company has succeeded in buying the equipment 47 per cent cheaper than
specified by the credit terms.
The Russian Federation offered Ukraine a credit in the form of equipment worth 44m dollars to complete the
construction of the reactors at the Rivne and Khmelnytskyy plants.
