07 June 2004 11:07 Conflict over wage arrears at troubled Russian mine goes on Two hundred and sixty-two miners from Khakassia's Yeniseyskaya pit where a 12-day hunger strike was held at the
end of May received notification of their impending dismissal today [7 June]. The notification was delivered at a trade
union meeting.
At the same meeting, the miners decided to appeal to the republic's Supreme Court, asking for harsher punishment
of the mine's former managing director, Ten Yen Tak. He failed to pay wages to staff at Yeniseyskaya over a period
of many months and a court recently fined him R80,000. The miners do not think the sentence was fair and today began
collecting money to hire an experienced lawyer to represent their interests in a higher court.
