36 demand salaries in hunger strike in Shakhty
ROSTOV-ON-DON. June 3 (Interfax-South) - The number of participants in a hunger strike in the town of Shakhty in the Rostov region has increased to 36, Deputy Chairman of the Rostov Territorial Committee of the Russian Coal Mining Trade Union Sergei Nekhoroshkov told Interfax. Seventeen representatives of the Shakhty coal mining equipment plant and 19 representatives of the first construction and assembly department, who joined the strike on Wednesday, are demanding to be paid their salaries. Both organizations are subsidiaries of Rostovugol Company Ltd. At first, nine workers were taking part in the hunger strike, which began on May 31. "The only way of paying the debt is to sell the property of the coal mines and the main debtor - the Rostovugol Public Joint Stock The health of the protesters is deteriorating, Nekhoroshkov said. They called for an ambulance last night, and two female protesters need to be hospitalized, he said. The protesters are asking for their salaries, the prosecution of executives who have breached the labor code, full settlements with dismissed employees, and bonuses for extra hours. A source in the Rostov industry, energy and mineral resources ministry told Interfax that salaries at the Shakhty plant had not been paid for nearly 11 months. The liquidating commission of the Rostovugol Public Joint Stock Company owes 4.5 million rubles to the personnel, while the salary debt of Rostovugol Company Ltd. stands at 27 million rubles.
