Russia prepared to provide substantial debt relief to Iraq
Moscow, 4 June: Russia is prepared to provide substantial debt relief to Iraq on the basis of the rules and procedures of the Paris Club, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yuriy Fedotov told Interfax in an interview. He stressed that "Russia's position on writing off Iraq's debts remains unchanged". "We are prepared provide substantial debt relief to Iraq the same way as other countries do, but this should be done on the basis of the rules and procedures of the Paris Club," Fedotov said. [Passage omitted: World Bank President James Wolfensohn said that reducing Iraq's debts will be the key issue in the coming month.] It was reported earlier that Iraq's debt to Russia amounted to about 8bn dollars.
