Georgian parliament urges Russian media to show "restraint" in South Ossetia
Tbilisi, 4 June: The Georgian parliament, by 131 votes, unanimously adopted a special statement on the current situation in the former South Ossetian Autonomous Region. The statement reads that the parliament asks the governments of the United States of America, Russia, member states of the European Union and other friendly states as well as all relevant international organizations to support the Georgian authorities in their efforts to reach a final political settlement of the situation in the former South Ossetian Autonomous Region and to protect the fundamental human rights and democratic values in the region, and to make their contribution to a full-scale rehabilitation of the region. The parliament calls on certain bodies of the Russian authorities and the Russian media to show more political farsightedness, correctness and restraint. Against the background of the commencement of building good-neighbourly and mutually beneficial relations between Georgia and Russia, attempts at political pressure and interference in domestic affairs of a sovereign state will not benefit either country, the statement reads. Georgia and Russia should be equally interested in the creation of a stable and peaceful Caucasus, and this can be achieved only through mutual respect and cooperation, it says. [Passage omitted]
