Eleven killed in Samara market explosion
An explosion occurred at an outdoor market in the central Russian city of Samara at 12:15 Moscow time, the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

According to officials reports as of 14:00 Moscow time, 11 people were killed in the blast and 30 people were injured. Twenty nine people were hospitalized, six of them in a critical condition.

It is unclear what caused the explosion. According to some reports, a gas canister, which was used for cooking, exploded.

A source in the Main Interior Department of the Samara region told RBC that prosecutors examined several possible causes of the incident, including a terrorist attack. “The cause of the blast will be established after the necessary examinations are carried out,” the source said.

The Samara region’s Department of the Federal Security Service, prosecutors and criminal experts are involved in the investigation. Security was tightened in the region following the explosion.
