02 June 2004 03:48 Transneft, oil companies to attend conference on June 8 MOSCOW. June 2 (Interfax) - Transneft pipeline company and Rosneft, Lukoil, Yukos, Tatneft, TNK-BP and Surgutneftegaz
oil companies will attend a conference on June 8 to discuss circumventing the Bosporus and Dardanelles when making oil
deliveries, Interfax was told at one of the companies.
The conference is intended to define optimal transportation routes and coordinate practical steps in this direction,
the source said.
Currently, the Bosporus is the only transit route for the export of Russian oil from the Black Sea. Turkey tightened
controls over shipping through the straits last year which, combined with bad weather in the region, has led to tanker
jams and delays in Russian oil reaching Europe. The commissioning of the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline and an increase in Kazakh
oil transit are expected to aggravate the situation.
Several pipeline projects are currently being developed to bypass the Bosporus: the Burgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline,
with a capacity of 35 million tonnes per year, supported by the Russian Foreign Ministry and Economic Development and
Trade Ministry; the Odessa-Brody-Gdansk pipeline (45 million tonnes); the Burgas-Vlore pipeline (40 million tonnes); and
the Kiyikoy-Ibrikhaba pipeline (60 million tonnes), which is being studied by Transneft. [RU EUROPE ASIA EEU EMRG O] ml
