Chechen interior minister asked to run for presidency
GROZNY. June 2 (Interfax) - A public assembly held in the Chechen village of Meken-Yurt on Tuesday evening called on the republic's Interior Minister Alu Alkhanov to join the presidential race in Chechnya, the district's administration told Interfax. In addition, more than 27,000 Chechen residents signed a letter to the United Russia Party's General Council asking it to nominate State Duma Deputy Ruslan Yamadayev as a candidate in the republic's early presidential elections, the executive committee of United Russia's regional branch told Interfax. Commenting on the letter, Yamadayev said it would be "unethical to launch the presidential race without even waiting for forty days to pass since the tragic death of [Chechen President] Akhmad Kadyrov."
