01 June 2004 05:52 Israel asks Gazprom to supply 6-8 bcm of gas per year MOSCOW. June 1 (Interfax) - Israel is asking Gazprom to ensure supplies of Russian gas to the country of 6 billion -
8 billion cubic meters per annum, Vlada Rusakova, head of the company's strategic development department, said.
She said that the project to supply gas to Israel has been on the table since 1998. Previously Israel wanted to
receive 2 billion - 3 billion cubic meters of gas per annum, which made supplies unprofitable at the proposed price. In
particular, enormous investment was required in the construction of a gas pipeline, Rusakova said.
However, at the moment Israel is proposing to Gazprom to supply 6 billion - 8 billion cubic meters per year.
"This is interesting to us, at this level of supplies investment will be paid back," Rusakova said.
Gazprom has started talks with Israel on supplies of Russian gas through Turkey, using the Blue Stream pipeline, and
the construction of gas transport infrastructure in Israel, Sergei Kupriyanov, press secretary to the Gazprom chief,
told Interfax.
He said that the Israeli side initiated the talks. The share of gas in the energy balance in Israel currently amounts
to about 1% and the main sources of fuel in the country are coal and fuel oil.
Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller on May 30 met with Israeli Infrastructure Minister Yossi Paritzky and is holding talks with
Israeli energy and gas companies on Tuesday. [RU EUROPE ASIA EEU EMRG ENR ELG NGS TRD MEAST IL] rd
