Taiwan-Russia Water Resources Conference to exchange views on and experiences in hydrology, fresh water resources
management and related technologies.
The participants struck an agreement upon the conclusion of the conference that Taiwan and Russia will engage in
bilateral exchanges in water resources management and related technological fields on a regular basis in the future.
The 12-member Taiwan delegation, comprised of officials from the Water Resources Agency (WRA) under the Ministry of
Economic Affairs, as well as academics from universities and representatives from the private industrial sector, was led
by WRA Director-General Chen Shen-hsien.
The Russian delegation, meanwhile, was comprised of scholars and specialists from the water resources research
institute under the prestigious Russian Academy of Sciences.
Russian expertise and research in water and ocean resources is renowned worldwide. The Russian "water"
researchers have long been keenly interested in Taiwan's research in the same field.
Most of the Russian participants said that they are amazed at the depth and scope of Taiwan's research in
hydrological sciences, water resources management and related technologies, particularly in the integration of public
water utilities and related technologies. One of the Russian participants said that he has gained unexpected knowledge
about his particular field after coming in contact with Taiwan's research.
In addition to taking part in the water conference, the Taiwan delegation will also attend an international hydrology
exposition -- ECWATECH-2004, the 6th International Trade Fair and Congress Water: Ecology and Technology, slated to open
in Moscow this week.
The visit to Moscow by the Taiwan delegation is also part of warm-up efforts ahead of an international water-related
technology exposition slated to open in Taiwan Sept. 3, according to Chen.
