Acting Chechen leader declines to stand in presidential election
Groznyy, 2 June: The acting president of Chechnya, Sergey Abramov, will not take part in the election to choose a head of the republic, scheduled for 29 August. Abramov announced this to journalists today. "In Chechnya there are quite a few more worthy people," Sergey Abramov said. He was appointed acting president of the republic after the death of the head of Chechnya, Akhmat Kadyrov, in a terrorist attack at Groznyy's Dinamo stadium on 9 May. So far the republic's electoral commission has not registered a single candidate for the top post in the republic. For registration a candidate has to submit 6,000 signatures of voters to the electoral commission or tender a deposit of R4,500,000.
