02 June 2004 22:54 Acting Chechen leader declines to stand in presidential election Groznyy, 2 June: The acting president of Chechnya, Sergey Abramov, will not take part in the election to choose a
head of the republic, scheduled for 29 August. Abramov announced this to journalists today.
"In Chechnya there are quite a few more worthy people," Sergey Abramov said. He was appointed acting
president of the republic after the death of the head of Chechnya, Akhmat Kadyrov, in a terrorist attack at
Groznyy's Dinamo stadium on 9 May.
So far the republic's electoral commission has not registered a single candidate for the top post in the
republic. For registration a candidate has to submit 6,000 signatures of voters to the electoral commission or tender a
deposit of R4,500,000.
