Russia introduces tougher regulations on labelling GM foods
As of today, Russia has introduced tougher regulations on using genetically modified sources in food products. Previously GM ingredients could make up 5 per cent of the product, whereas now this threshold has been reduced to under 1 per cent, above which producers must provide special labelling for such products. A scandal has developed around these new developments. Several Russian companies are planning to file a lawsuit against the Russian branch of Greenpeace. Yesterday [31 May] the environmental watchdog published a list of Russian food producers that use genetically modified sources. The companies maintain that Greenpeace did not approach them for information and that they will disprove the allegation in court.
