01 June 2004 15:53 Russia happy with Azeri president`s policies - deputy minister Baku, 1 June: Russia is happy about the fact that the new Azerbaijani president, Ilham Aliyev, continues his father
Heydar Aliyev's policies as this helps strengthen [bilateral] relations, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Viktor
Kalyuzhnyy told the opening ceremony of the 11th International Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition and Conference today.
>From Soviet times, Baku has been famous for its rich reserves of hydrocarbons and its expertise to extract them,
including from the seabed, Kalyuzhnyy said.
He expressed regret about the fact that LUKoil is the only Russian company which survived major rivalry to develop
Azerbaijan's oil and gas fields. He also spoke about the importance of natural gas. "The gas can resolve not
only domestic issues, but also - provided it is used rationally - satisfy the demands of the European Union," he
said.
