31 May 2004 23:55 Russian railway monopoly unveils plans to rebuild infrastructure in Chechnya Moscow, 31 May: The Russian Railways [RR] company is to invest R2.4bn [83m dollars at the current exchange rate] in
rebuilding Chechnya's railways, head of the public relations directorate Konstantin Pashkov told ITAR-TASS
today.
RR explained that the rebuilding of Chechnya's railways would proceed in three stages. In the first one, in
2004, termini, stations, and halt platforms in the republic will be rebuilt. Commuter services will be opened on the
sections from Prokhladnaya to Gudermes and from Groznyy to Gudermes. A container terminal will be set up at the Groznyy
station.
In the second stage, in 2005, work will be done on the electrification of Chechnya's railways and the
restoration of their IT and communication facilities. In the third stage, in 2006, there are plans to launch a regular
passenger service on the line from Baku to Mineralnyye Vody, and a commuter service on the section from Sleptsovskaya to
Gudermes.
