Hunger strike of Siberian miners ends
ABAKAN. May 28 (Interfax-Siberia) - The 12-day hunger strike at the Yeniseiskaya mine in Russia's internal republic of Khakasia, Siberia, ended on Friday, a source in the republican government told Interfax. "The miners ended their hunger strike when back wages dating to last October were paid to them. A decision has been made to pay everybody employed at the mine, not just the strikers," he said. The miners went home after receiving their money, he said. The Khakasian government decided Friday morning to allocate over 6 million rubles to pay back wages to the Yeniseiskaya miners. Doctors insisted on Thursday that 32 of the strikers quit the strike to avoid permanent damage to their health. They said nearly one-half of the strikers also needed to end the strike for health reasons. [RU EUROPE ASIA EMRG JOB] ap aw
