28 May 2004 07:08 Russia: Sakhalin launches new offshore oil production season Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, 28 May: The sixth season of offshore oil extraction opened in Sakhalin today.
The Vityaz production complex comprising the Molikpak platform, the [double-hulled] 158,000 t dead-weight Okha oil
storage tanker and a floating moorage extracts oil in the Sea of Okhotsk. The 100,000 t dead-weight Primorye tanker is
already on its way to pick up the first crude from the Vityaz.
The Molikpak platform will be extracting offshore oil for six months, the press centre of the Sakhalin Energy company
[Sakhalin-2 project operator] said today. This is explained by severe climatic conditions of the Sea of Okhotsk that is
frozen in winter.
"We hope that the sixth crude production year will be successful as well and that we will be able to confirm our
reputation for being a stable and reliable supplier of oil to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region and the dynamic
market of the US West Coast," Sakhalin Energy CEO Steve McVeigh has said.
The first crude of this year's season will be sent to Japan. In the last five years, Sakhalin oil was forwarded
to the Republic of Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines and the USA. The total volume of crude produced by the
Vityaz since July 1999 equals 6.5m tonnes.
