Russian minister doubts ambitious plans to bring inflation down
Moscow, 27 May: Russian Minister of Economic Development and Trade German Gref said it was not reasonable to expect that annual inflation would amount to 3 per cent in Russia before 2008. "This task can take less time to be implemented, but not in the period of structural reforms," the minister noted today during a government sitting. He thinks that when such reforms are being carried out the normal inflation level ought to be between 5 and 6 per cent. "After 2008 we may attain the target inflation rate of 3 per cent, but it is not feasible to do it earlier." the minister noted. He added that no forecasts that inflation would be going down at such rates could be inferred from the current dynamics. [Passage omitted]
