Major Russian defence plant to have power supply cut off
Saransk, 25 May: The Ulyanovskenergo company today announced that it would cut off the power supply to Ulyanovsk Machine-Building Works completely. The power-generating company said this decision was because the defence enterprise owes many million roubles in debts. The current debt alone for power consumed is R34.2m, whereas the works's overall debt to the power engineers is R233.7m. Negotiations between the power engineers and Valeriy Davydov, the enterprise's outside manager, have been fruitless and the forced disconnection of a number of the works's facilities last week has brought no results either. The works will come to a complete standstill on Thursday [27 May]. [Passage omitted]
