Russian, Azeri power grids - energy exchange memorandum signed The head of the Unified Energy System [UES] of Russia, Anatoliy Chubays, is paying a visit to Baku. The aim of the
visit is to discuss prospects for bilateral relations in the energy sphere. Chubays voiced readiness to make investments
in projects in Azerbaijan. He went on to add that not only issues relevant to Azerbaijan, but also projects covering the
Caucasus region will be discussed during the visit. He said that in this connection there are concrete proposals.
Chubays started the trip with visiting the grave to Azerbaijan's national leader Heydar Aliyev and the
Martyrs' Avenue [where the Karabakh war dead are buried]. Then he held a meeting with Etibar Piriverdiyev,
president of the Azarenerji [Azerbaijani energy] joint-stock company.
A memorandum of cooperation in the electric energy sphere was signed between the UES and Azarenerji. In line with the
memorandum, the sides will carry out a long-term exchange of agreed amounts of electricity.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is now carrying out talks with Chubays.
