24 May 2004 16:40 Embattled Russian oil major faces tax evasion charges in court Moscow, 24 May: The Moscow court of arbitration has begun hearing an action brought by the Ministry of Taxes and
Levies against Yukos [oil company] for over R99bn [around 3bn dollars].
A ministry spokesman told the court that a second audit of Yukos had been carried out for the year 2000, which led to
a decision on 14 March this year to take the company to the court of arbitration. The audit established that Yukos had
evaded tax by using "front" organizations controlled by itself.
The ministry is claiming a range of tax payments from Yukos, including VAT, profit tax, corporate property tax, road
tax and housing infrastructure taxes.
