Pedigree livestock brought to Chechnya to revive farming
Groznyy, 22 May: The livestock industry of Chechnya, all but destroyed in the years of anarchy, is being revived. To improve the quality and quantity of Chechnya's livestock, a total of 700 head of cattle and 1,300 head of pedigree sheep were brought to the republic from neighbouring regions last year. The Russian Agriculture Ministry has allocated R20m for these purposes. Chechen [presumably state - see below] cattle farms today have more than 4,000 head of cattle and sheep, the Chechen Agriculture and Food Ministry has told ITAR-TASS. With last year's offspring, their herd of pedigree cattle increased by hundreds of animals. The acquisition of pedigree cattle for Chechnya was launched at the end of 2002. Such cattle was bought from pedigree farms in Stavropol Territory, North Ossetia and Voronezh Region. The numbers of cattle at state farms are not increasing as fast as at private farms. The numbers of cattle at private farms have almost caught up with the levels of the early 1990s. There are more than 150,000 head of cattle at private farms in Chechnya, the ministry said. In accordance with the special federal socioeconomic programme for Chechnya, a dairy plant is to be rebuilt in Groznyy this year. Experts say the needs of the republic's population in dairy products will be met in full after it has been commissioned.
